COUNTY DURHAM – SCARCE FIRST EDITION MINIATURE SPEED WITH LATIN TITLE. 1617.
Scarce and highly decorative copper engraved map of the county prepared by Pieter van den Keere. He began his series of maps in 1599 but the set was not published in book form until 1617. The present map is from the first edition published by William Jansson Blaeu in Amsterdam, to accompany a miniature edition of Camden's "Britannia". This is the only edition with a Latin title. The maps were subsequently produced to accompany miniature editions of John Speed's famous "Prospect", published by William Humble from 1627 onwards. Decorative strapwork title and scale bar.
